I have set myself some challenges. One of them is to reflect on the challenges here.

Broncos Members Day at Suncorp Stadium
Jan 20, 2018

For Christmas, James and I got a 4 day Flexi game Broncos membership after heading a bunch of games in 2017. They listed a number of member benefits but it was really about guaranteeing ourselves a few games, and getting the membership lanyard.

Today was Members’ Day. It was part of the deal so we thought we’d go along. It was at Suncorp Stadium with opportunities to meet some playersand to set foot on the hallowed Lang Park turf. 8f it wasn’t great, we could always head home early.

The Twelve Tasks of Hounslow
Jan 7, 2018

The challenge that I have set myself is to complete twelve tasks. I don’t really expect to meet all twelve of them but I will give them each a good crack. There will be some rules for each - some might change as we go. I’ll go into each separately in different posts to give a better understanding of what each task is about. This will also help me reach Task 6!

Homework
Nov 28, 2017

Last week I had homework to hand in. I had to write a letter to Alex to help celebrate her graduation.

Climbing the mountain
Nov 19, 2017

It’s a little symbolidc, but it’s also part of a number of the challenges that I am embarking on. No less the one the “post on this site” challenge.

Mt Coot-tha is near home and it took me a long time to realise that climbing a mountain could be pretty easy. Especially this one. On my first trip up, I stopped a few times. The number of stops decreased each time until I could make it to the top in one hit. It’s only just over 2 km from where I start. And I don’t take the steep trails. But for someone who hasn’t done that before, it was an achievement.

The premise
Nov 16, 2017

We all have moments where we think we can be better than what we are. It doesn’t mean that we aren’t happy with our current lot in life, just that we can be better. Studies show* that there is personal benefit in taking stock, looking forward to where you want to be, and to take action to get there.

I have tinkered with this over the last few years with some success – changing what I do at work is a good example. I now want to do a little more for me personally and to become better. I’d like to think that Jack Nicholson was not onto something in his 1997 movie with Helen Hunt. I don’t think this is as good as it gets.

So. What next?

On top of the world!
On top of the world!

The mid-run treat of the views at the top of Mt Coot-tha. Time enough for a quick pic to prove I was there before the run back down.

Day 1
Day 1

The first morning of an Ashes series is always filled with excitement. This time the adrenaline was flowing as we rushed to our seat to see the first ball. We left home at 8am to give ourselves time to enjoy the around the ground activities. We missed all of that and sat down at about 9:55. Just in time!

In the lead up to the Rugby League World Cup, a group of league players were arranged at Reddacliff Place.  This is the Australian representative. We saw these on the Thursday after a day at th cricket. The Semi Final (Australia vs Fiji) was on the Friday.

And here are the clones for the other team (or at least those that fit in the pic)

Try time!
Try time!

Valentine Holmes streaks away for an intercept try just after half time on his way to a record 6 tries. Fiji went hard early and lead with a penalty goal. Australia were quick to take control once they had a sniff and ended up winning 54-6.

It was a fun family outing but we all went home tired, especially with three of us backing up from Day 1 of the Ashes the day before, and Alex arriving home from her Canberra school trip earlier in the afternoon.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

After a day at the cricket, and then the football, a third consecutive day of activities was too much. We ditched the idea of Carols under the Stars on the Saturday night. Fortunately they were on Sunday and we were still able to catch them!

I skipped work for half an hour and managed to snag a few snaps. The English players were quite good, but a few of the Australian players could do well to pay more attention to the fans. Josh Duggan didn’t even look up when he signed my poster.

Waiting for Autographs

Members Day at Suncorp Stadium and plenty of autographs to be had. Unfortunately this meant plenty of waiting. This is us waiting.

Legends Gather

Down in The Members Lounge, seeking the solace of the air conditioning, and we bumped into a few Broncos legends. I had to explain who Kevie Walters, Justin Hodges and Scott Prince were to James, but he was happy to get a photo and autograph from the old timers.

Great chance to grace the playing surface of Lang Park and grab a selfie...

If he is going to achieve greatness here in later years, he has to learn to feel at home out in the middle.

James wasn’t overly keen on getting photos during Members Day, but was happy to get a snap with his namesake, James Roberts.
